On Friday, Aug. 22, Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown joined executives from Höegh Autoliners and JAXPORT in welcoming the company’s newest auto ship, Höegh Jacksonville, for its inaugural visit to the city it was named after. The ship, named in tribute to the company’s busiest U.S. port, is the first of two sister vessels delivered to Höegh, each able to carry up to 6,500 vehicles. The company operates 60 ocean carriers and has a worldwide network of approximately 20 offices in four regions. During the celebration, Mayor Brown, JAXPORT Board Chairman John Falconetti and others VIPs rode along with ILA workers loading the first vehicles from Jacksonville on to the ship for transport. The mascot for Jacksonville’s NFL team, the Jaguars’ Jaxson De Ville, and the mascot of the city’s minor league baseball team, the Jacksonville SunsSouthpaw, helped direct traffic and entertained guests at the Jacksonville-themed event. “While this is a great honor, Höegh’s commitment to Northeast Florida goes deeper than the name on this impressive new ship,” said Falconetti. “The company has become an important part of our community and a vital component of our port business. We know today’s inaugural visit is just one of many more milestones in our enduring partnership.” JAXPORT is the nation’s No. 1 port for vehicle exports and among the top vehicle processing ports in the nation. In 2013, more than 630,000 vehicles moved through the port.

Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center is a 265,000-square-foot (24,600 m2) convention center located in downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Opened in 1986, it was built incorporating Jacksonville's Union Station as well as several thousand square feet of newly built structure. Located in the Jacksonville neighborhood of LaVilla, the Prime Osborn contains two exhibition halls totaling 78,500 square feet (7,290 m2), several ballrooms and meetings rooms. The City of Jacksonville is looking to replace the Prime Osborn within the next decade, with a larger 500,000+ square foot convention center in downtown Jacksonville. The Convention Center station of the JTA Skyway is located across the street. LaVilla, at that time a suburb of Jacksonville, was for many years an important railroad hub. The first union station in the area was built by the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway (later part of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad) in 1883. The Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway (also later part of the ACL) began to use it in 1884. Other terminals served the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad (later part of the Seaboard Air Line Railway), the Florida East Coast Railway, and the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway. The company was incorporated in 1894 by Henry Flagler, who owned the Florida East Coast Railway. Its first Union Depot opened on February 4, 1895, and was completed on January 15, 1897. It came to be known as the Flagler Depot. New York architect Kenneth M. Murchison won the competition for designing the terminal by borrowing freely from the design of New York's Pennsylvania Station, which in turn had been modeled after the ancient Roman Baths of Caracalla. The terminal was constructed 1917-1919. Murchison was an interesting guy, born in NYC, educated at Columbia University and in Europe, and became known as one of the finest RR station architects in the US. He designed stations for the PRR, Lackawanna, and even the main RR station in Havana, Cuba. He died in 1938. When second Union Station built by Murchison opened in 1919 (on the site of the original one), it was the largest railroad station in the South. At its peak, the terminal handled as many as 142 trains and 20,000 passengers a day. Some of the passenger trains handled in Jacksonville were 18 to 22 railcars long. Within the terminal, there was a restaurant, snack bars, newsstands, a barber shop, florist, a drug store, and gift shops. The Jacksonville terminal had 32 tracks. 29 of those tracks were passenger tracks with platforms. Of those, 1-15 were stub or "head" tracks, which ended at the bumper posts. (Some of these massive decorative concrete posts still stand within the Convention Center Concourse). The station was last used on January 3, 1974; Amtrak moved to a new Jacksonville station several miles north. In 1982, a public-private partnership was started, led by former CSX chairman Prime F. Osborn III. The new convention center opened on October 17, 1986. Jacksonville Transportation Authority has plans to convert the convention center back into a railroad terminal with the re-opening of passenger travel down the Florida East Coast Railway and eventually commuter rail. This plan will rebuild the passenger platforms and restore the convention center back into a rail terminal. The convention center is to stay at the location, with a convention center and rail terminal complex. Northeast Florida Model Railroaders presents the 1/87 HO scale modular model railroad and the Jacksonville Florida Union Station Terminal. The model station was first scratch built by Larry Brennan and later restored by Carl Corsi. The model is owned by Northeast Florida Model Railroaders Incorporated and maintained by Mr. Corsi. There isn't a model company anywhere in the world that has manufactured a model kit of this building. It isn't a plastic kit but rather a scratch built made from wood. Larry Brennan carefully designed and scaled down the original building to 1/87 true HO scale for model railroading purposes. Our layout is controlled by the latest NCE digital command control system (DCC) and features model railroad manufactures such as Athearn, Broadway Limited Imports, Bachmann Trains, Mikes Train House (MTH) etc. Northeast Florida Model Railroaders represents the greater Jacksonville Florida metropolitan area and is a group of model railroad enthusiasts who strive to educate and share our hobby with public open houses and around the world through our videos. At our home location in Jacksonville Florida our layout is twenty two feet wide and eighty feet long housed inside a 9,000 square foot warehouse. The camera used to create the cab ride effects and the overall video is a Sony High Definition Action Cam HDR-AS10 featuring the Carl Zeiss Tessar HD lens system.
