Nearly 1,300 pampered with free dresses, beauty services! JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Nearly 1,300 military spouses were honored with a “night out” at a new event launched Friday at the Veterans Memorial Arena in downtown Jacksonville. The evening included beauty services, massages, fitness classes, self-defense demonstrations, CPR training plus food and drink. A couple of people in Jacksonville’s Veterans and Military Affairs Department pointed fingers at each and said, “They deserve the credit, not me.” The people who attended said they had a blast and gave credit to everyone involved, whether it was their idea or not. “I think it’s great. We don’t get enough recognition, and it’s a great place to meet a lot of the wives and spouses. And I think it’s great. I really do,” military spouse Shannon Dawnson said. Dawson’s voice was echoed by so many others as at the event. They said they appreciate being appreciated. “I think it’s fabulous because, as a military spouse, you sometimes forget to take care of yourself because you’re taking care of your family. Then someone says, ‘Let’s pamper you!’ It’s like, ‘Yes, please!’” military spouse Promise Vickers said. Vendors lined the floor of the arena, offering lots of free things for military spouses. “I actually think it’s a wonderful idea, you know. It’s a chance for us to relax and get pampered, which is awesome because nowhere I’ve ever been has done this,” military spouse Kenna Reklis said. And through a partnership with the Greater Jacksonville USO, more than 800 Ann Taylor dresses were given out free of charge. “This is the big deal. The USO is here to support our 50,000 military families. And today is a very, very special day as we honor the spouses of our military with wonderful brand new dresses and a wonderful day of beauty,” Greater Jacksonville USO Executive Director Michael O’Brien said. Luckily, organizers helped keep things sane. “We’ve got a numbered ticket system so it doesn’t turn into a black Friday cat-fight. Every 15 minutes, we call the next 50 back to try them on,” said Ashley Rogan with the City of Jacksonville Military Affairs and Veterans. The event was huge hit, but the sentiment of saying thanks seemed to top all other considerations. ”This is wonderful! I was so surprised when I got the email from HOA. I said, that was so nice that they acknowledge the spouses because we play a big role. We keep everything going, the bills going, all the maintenance. Everything. And besides, keeping them encouraged from afar,” military spouse Symanthia Stewart said. One woman told News4Jax that of all the places she’s lived because he husband has been stationed or deployed, Jacksonville shows the most appreciation. And now, organizers said they want to do it again, after the success of this evening. #USOJAX #JAXUSO #USO #militaryspouses #militaryappreciation #usoconnects #volunteers #servicemembers #instajax #igersjax

The Tillie Fowler Memorial can be found on the northbank of the St. Johns Riverwalk behind the Riverside YMCA. The memorial was initiated by city council president Elaine Brown in partnership with Jacksonville’s Art in Public Places Program, Swisher International, the Haskell Corporation, and Holland & Knight Law Firm. The sculptor was chosen from 46 other submissions. “Showing the Way” by renowned artist Bower Hatcher was chosen to represent and honor the memory of Tillie Fowler. Tillie Fowler earned the nickname “Steel Magnolia” for her strong character and dedication to her principles. The sculpture was modeled on the shape of an oak tree to reflect Tillie’s strong personal characteristics. The inside of the sculpture is made of three separate colored layers of steel lattices, representing Tillie’s commitment to: Family, Community, and Country. The design did draw some criticism, but one of its most outspoken supporters and admirers is Tille’s husband, Buck Fowler. The memorial stands 25 feet tall and is 4,500 lbs of steel, concrete, and LED lights. The sculptor, Bower Hatcher, has about 40 other public sculptures. Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center is a 265,000-square-foot (24,600 m2) convention center located in downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Opened in 1986, it was built incorporating Jacksonville's Union Station as well as several thousand square feet of newly built structure. Located in the Jacksonville neighborhood of LaVilla, the Prime Osborn contains two exhibition halls totaling 78,500 square feet (7,290 m2), several ballrooms and meetings rooms. The City of Jacksonville is looking to replace the Prime Osborn within the next decade, with a larger 500,000+ square foot convention center in downtown Jacksonville. The Convention Center station of the JTA Skyway is located across the street. LaVilla, at that time a suburb of Jacksonville, was for many years an important railroad hub. The first union station in the area was built by the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway (later part of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad) in 1883. The Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway (also later part of the ACL) began to use it in 1884. Other terminals served the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad (later part of the Seaboard Air Line Railway), the Florida East Coast Railway, and the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway. The company was incorporated in 1894 by Henry Flagler, who owned the Florida East Coast Railway. Its first Union Depot opened on February 4, 1895, and was completed on January 15, 1897. It came to be known as the Flagler Depot. New York architect Kenneth M. Murchison won the competition for designing the terminal by borrowing freely from the design of New York's Pennsylvania Station, which in turn had been modeled after the ancient Roman Baths of Caracalla. The terminal was constructed 1917-1919. Murchison was an interesting guy, born in NYC, educated at Columbia University and in Europe, and became known as one of the finest RR station architects in the US. He designed stations for the PRR, Lackawanna, and even the main RR station in Havana, Cuba. He died in 1938. When second Union Station built by Murchison opened in 1919 (on the site of the original one), it was the largest railroad station in the South. At its peak, the terminal handled as many as 142 trains and 20,000 passengers a day. Some of the passenger trains handled in Jacksonville were 18 to 22 railcars long. Within the terminal, there was a restaurant, snack bars, newsstands, a barber shop, florist, a drug store, and gift shops. The Jacksonville terminal had 32 tracks. 29 of those tracks were passenger tracks with platforms. Of those, 1-15 were stub or "head" tracks, which ended at the bumper posts. (Some of these massive decorative concrete posts still stand within the Convention Center Concourse). The station was last used on January 3, 1974; Amtrak moved to a new Jacksonville station several miles north. In 1982, a public-private partnership was started, led by former CSX chairman Prime F. Osborn III. The new convention center opened on October 17, 1986. Jacksonville Transportation Authority has plans to convert the convention center back into a railroad terminal with the re-opening of passenger travel down the Florida East Coast Railway and eventually commuter rail. This plan will rebuild the passenger platforms and restore the convention center back into a rail terminal. The convention center is to stay at the location, with a convention center and rail terminal complex. Northeast Florida Model Railroaders presents the 1/87 HO scale modular model railroad and the Jacksonville Florida Union Station Terminal. The model station was first scratch built by Larry Brennan and later restored by Carl Corsi. The model is owned by Northeast Florida Model Railroaders Incorporated and maintained by Mr. Corsi. There isn't a model company anywhere in the world that has manufactured a model kit of this building. It isn't a plastic kit but rather a scratch built made from wood. Larry Brennan carefully designed and scaled down the original building to 1/87 true HO scale for model railroading purposes. Our layout is controlled by the latest NCE digital command control system (DCC) and features model railroad manufactures such as Athearn, Broadway Limited Imports, Bachmann Trains, Mikes Train House (MTH) etc. Northeast Florida Model Railroaders represents the greater Jacksonville Florida metropolitan area and is a group of model railroad enthusiasts who strive to educate and share our hobby with public open houses and around the world through our videos.
